W: Have you heard that Nancy’s boss wants her to accept a six-week job in Acapulco?
M: She’ll really like that, especially since all of her cost will be paid and she can practise her Spanish.
W: Yes, but most of all, she’ll get to spend her free time bathing in the sun on those lovely beaches.
M: When will she be leaving?
W: Since she doesn’t need a passport, it’ll probably be in about a week.
M: That doesn’t give her much time to get organized.

M: Hello, Mary. Why are you standing here in the cold wind?
W: I’m waiting for a bus, but the buses are very full at this time of the day.
M: Where are you going? This isn’t your way home. You must take a bus from the other side of the street to go home.
W: I’m not going home now. I’m going for a walk in the park. I always like to go for a walk before lunch.
M: Then why aren’t you going there on foot? Why are you going by bus? Why not walk from here to the park, too? It isn’t very far.
W: Oh, no, Bill. It isn’t very interesting to walk through the streets; in fact, it’s very boring. So I always take bus No.3.
(Text 9)
W: Can I talk to you for a moment, Tom?
M: Of course, Julia. Sit down. What is it?
W: I’ve decided to leave.
M: Leave?
W: Yes.
M: Oh, no. Is it because we’re moving out of London?
W: Well, yes. But there are other reasons.
M: I see you never liked working here.
W: No, no. I’ve enjoyed working here. But…
M: But what?
W: Well, I haven’t had time for other things. I’ve worked here for four years. And I’d like to do something different.
M: What do you mean, something different?
W: I want to travel. You know, I have never been to other countries.
W: Haven’t you?
M: No, I haven’t. I want to live abroad and learn to speak a different language.
M: Well, what can I say? I’m really sorry. But I understand.
W: Thank you. Tom.
(Text 10)
My wife and I occasionally go to a nice restaurant to eat. My wife’s mother lives with us and she stays with the children. This makes it very easy for us to go out for the evening.
Last week we went to the restaurant in a new hotel. We had a wonderful meal. First, we had soup and a salad. Then Helen, my wife, had mutton with peas and carrots, and I had beefsteak with potatoes. For dessert, I had some ice cream and Helen had fresh fruit. We had several cups of coffee after we finished eating. The food was delicious, the quantity was large, and it wasn’t too expensive.
Our children don’t like to eat in restaurants because they have to sit and be quiet for a long time. They would rather go to their grandmother’s farm. Their grandmother—my mother prepares everything they like. She usually has fried chicken, corn, and hot biscuits with honey. She always serves plenty of chocolate ice cream and cake for dessert.
I’m always surprised that my father doesn’t weigh a lot more when I see how much he eats. But he works very hard on the farm from about 5 o’clock in the morning until it gets dark in the evening.
When my parents visit us in the city, we usually take them to a restaurant. I know they enjoy it, but my father always eats something else after he gets home. The quantity may be large in the restaurant, but it is still not large enough for a hungry farmer.

If you want to make a good impression at an American dinner party, you may do as follows:
First of all, you should buy a small gift, such as a bottle of wine or a box of chocolate for your host or hostess. Second, you’d better arrive on time. You may arrive about ten minutes earlier. Third, during the dinner, don’t forget to say that the food is delicious. After you finish eating, you shouldn’t stay too long. Finally, thank your host or hostess for the good dinner when you leave.
If you are not sure what to do, you can always follow your hosts or hostess.
