Those who like to browse in bookstores are likely to find the new ABC Chinese-English dictionary series published by Shanghai Dictionary Publisher. The series consists of the “ABC Hanying Cidian(the 1997 edition of the Chinese-English Dictionary),”and its pocket-size edition(2002),as well as the “ABC Hanying Da Cidian(2003).”
One may ask why these ABC Chinese-English dictionaries are there, when there are already so many reference books on the market.
“ABC”stands for“alphabetically based computerized”. The ABC dictionaries follow the strict alphabetical order of words. Words with the same pronunciation but different tones are ordered by their tones, from one to four followed by the neutral tone. Words with the same pronunciation and tone are arranged according to their frequency of use.
This feature contrasts sharply with the traditional Chinese and Chinese-English dictionaries, where the order of words is arranged by its first character. Such words as dajia(everyone)and daxue(university)are listed under da(big)because they both have the character da(big)as the initial character.
In contrast, ABC dictionaries list da(big),dajia(everyone)and daxue(university)alphabetically as words. Each has its own entry, and they are not necessarily next to each other. Between da(big)and dajia(everyone),there are nine pages of words in the“ABC Hanying Da Cidian”including daba(large bus), daban(dress/make up), daji(strike),to name just a few.
The advantage of these ABC Chinese-English dictionaries is that it simplifies the reference procedure(过程)once the pronunciation is known.

A new international study shows that six people die every minute from smoking. That equals 3 million deaths around the world every year. If the present rate of smoking continues, the number of deaths each year from smoking could rise to 10 million by the year 2020.
The study describes smoking as the biggest cause to deadly diseases among grown-ups in industrial countries. So far most of the smoking deaths have happened to men, especially in developing countries.
A researcher at the world health organization says 70% of Chinese men smoke more than 15 cigarettes each day. In Latin America about 50% of the men are smokers. There was a park near my home. But I didn’t go there very often. Everyone said there was nothing special. One afternoon I went into the park and found it was really small. I walked quickly because there wasn’t much to see.72I found that the two ways were different from each other.
The left one was wide and clean.73Though the flowers weren’t that beautiful, they made me feel good. I decided to take this path. But wait! I looked at the right one. The path didn’t look as nice. It looked like it had not been cleaned for months. Grass grew everywhere, I couldn’t make up my mind for a long time.74.
Ah! There was a small garden there. It was beautiful, perhaps the most beautiful garden I had ever seen75Many people told me that there was nothing much to see in the park. Now I’d like to tell them that if they had followed the right way, they would have felt differently. But when I told them about what I had seen in the park, they just smiled at me without saying a word. I knew they didn’t believe me. They couldn’t even remember that path because it was so small.
My trip to the park that day made me understand something about life. Don’t be afraid to choose a different path. You may get a big surprise!
A.There were lots of flowers on both sides of the path.
B.A fter a while a strange feeling made me follow the dirty path. It wasn’t nice, but I didn’t want to give up. At last, I came to the end of the path.
